COMMUNITY & LEISURE
WOOLWICH PAVILION, BERESFORD SQUARE WOOLWICH

The planning drawings for the pavilion and the wider public realm improvements were completed by Studio Weave and LDA Design as part of the Woolwich ‘Future High Street Fund’ Town Centre Improvements Vision which was set out by WeMadeThat in 2021.

Towards the Gatehouse they envisioned a ‘market garden’ which prioritised maximising the quantity of soft landscape, containing a ‘pavilion’ hosting commercial space and public wc’s. The pavilion would perform a civic role demarcating the threshold between bustling market and tranquil gardens. It also defines the route across to the Woolwich Arsenal

The regeneration of Beresford Square has improved accessibility and the natural environment for the community who use it.

We became involved through Elite Landscape who were the principal contractor on the job and who needed a safe pair of hands to deliver a deceptively complicated small building.

The programme for the project dictated that a fast start on site was required so in conjunction with the Structural engineer and MEP consultant we worked ahead of the normal design programme to resolve any issues relating to the the foundations or the steel frame.

The suppliers produced their design in both PDF and Revit format which allowed the design team to quickly review the finalised steelwork design so that an early site start could be achieved to meet the demanding programme.

Careful co-ordination of windows and cladding also had to take place to ensure gaps in the boards and windows aligned correctly. Credit must go to the cladding installers whose helping hand brackets were perfectly aligned allowing the rivets on the end product to read as a continuous line with very little deviation. They also ensured any visible base brackets were sprayed black so that they could not be seen.

The Air source heat pumps, solar panels, natural ventilation and green roof all contribute to allow the scheme to achieve a BREEAM Excellent rating meaning its longer term running costs will be lower.

The Pavilion is due to be handed over shortly to become the home of Winchester City Flyers in the winter and for cricket during the summer months and is an autstanding asset for the local community delivered to an excellent quality by the main contractor Milestone on behalf of Winchester City Council.
